Pair focuses on fun

Marcus Bland and his daughter, Sarah, work seamlessly together. This father and daughter team at Mt Eliza Optical have been working together for around three and half years and love every minute of it - including the fact that the new premises is just 5m from Ritchies supermarket, which means the petty cash can get a great daily workout.

“Getting to banter and have a joke with our clients makes our job enjoyable and hopefully our clients leave with smiles on their faces,” the pair says.  “We don’t always agree with each other,” says Sarah. “But that’s what makes it interesting,” continues Marcus.

“Getting to work with family is so rewarding and we jell well,” says Sarah. “I’ve learnt an array of skills just by watching and imitating how my dad interacts with clients. I’m now serving clients who remember me as a toddler.

“We’d love to meet some new faces. Come in and have a browse, a chat and a laugh.”

Spread your wings and stretch your legs

It's that time of the year when people try to escape the cold of winter and head off to somewhere warmer. Whether you are heading up north to sunny Queensland or a bit farther to the European summer, it goes without saying you have a lot of sitting ahead of you ... and unless you have managed to get an upgrade or an emergency aisle seat, the majority of that will be in cramped seating.

The Sport Injury Clinic in Frankston warns that prolonged sitting has a negative effect on the body, primarily decreased veinous return. This is due to the 'kinks' in your veins from having your hips and knees bent as well as the general decrease in lower limb muscle activity. These factors combine to cause swelling in your feet and calves as well as increasing the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

There are a few things you can do to reduce the risk of DVT, including regular walks up the aisle and 'foot pump' exercises in your seat, but the best thing you can do is spend as much time as you can at the airport just walking about.  Waiting in layover for connecting flights is time that should be spent on the move. Minimise sitting time where you can.

The Sport Injury Clinic has a full list of tips for more comfortable travelling, so go to tsic.com.au/index.php/social-hub/tsic-blog to find out more.

Lavish designs by Lisa by Kate Sears

DSC_0066.JPG

Frustrated at the lack of fashionable clothing and lingerie for full-figured women and longing to own her own business, Lisa gave up her work as a secretary 22 years ago and made a splash in this niche market.

Lisa’s Lacies was born, and Lisa hasn’t stopped making tracks and collecting fans with her distinctive, thoughtful and fashion-forward pieces. She adores her loyal customers who send their friends in to enjoy her well-made and long-lasting pieces, just as they have.

“I thought to myself, ‘I don’t want to wear those ugly styles with limited choices’,” Lisa says. “Ultimately, I was very selfish as I wanted to design these products for myself, but everyone enjoyed my designs so it’s worked out well.”

With sizes ranging from 12 to 40+, the store is the best destination for lingerie and clothing in larger sizes. Lisa’s proud to say her business is Australian owned and run, and the items she sells are made right here in Seaford with staff she’s worked with for decades. “We love our girls.  We ship worldwide, but we focus on sourcing our material from Australian companies.”

If you’re thinking it’s everything you’ve been wishing for, you’ll be drawn to Lisa’s exclusive new range that was launched at a VIP night live fashion show last month (pictured here).  Vibrant colours in casual styles, stylish cuts, blue hues, feminine prints, flattering flowy garments and dressier numbers for glam nights were all on show. The versatile collection of mix and match items is perfectly interchangeable for Melbourne’s ever-changing weather. They were almost sold out by the night’s end, with two more runs completed since. This truly confirms Lisa’s flair for design.

“It’s very hard, but at the same time it’s rewarding when I see our customers comfortable, well fitted and feeling fashionable.”

Have a chat with the lovely Lisa and find that best-fitting bra you’ve been longing for.

It’s the cool way to reduce fat

Coolsculpting is a revolutionary method of reducing fat in stubborn areas that may be difficult to lose with diet or exercise alone. Coolsculpting can be used to reduce unwanted fat on your abdomen, love handles, back rolls, thighs and inner arms. There’s also a new treatment called the Coolmini, which will treat fat deposits on the inner knees and under the chin.

The procedure uses patented technology to deliver targeted and controlled “cooling” to specific areas of your body. This affects only fat cells while ensuring no harm to any surrounding tissue or cells. Known as cryolipolysis, the process uses the body’s natural clearing mechanisms to remove the destroyed fat cells over a two to three-month period. As the fat is eliminated by the body, you will notice a reduction in your fat deposits. One treatment may reduce your fat deposits by 20-25 per cent, and these effects are permanent.

Performed by Emma, Certified CoolSculpting Technician and Plastic Surgery Practice Nurse to Miss Patricia Terrill, the procedure requires no needles, anaesthesia or incisions and eliminates the downtime associated with traditional liposuction.  Contact Ms Terrill’s rooms today to find out whether the Coolsculpting fat freezing procedure is right for you.

Donna vows to talk bowels

Frankly Frankston speaks to Bowel Cancer Australia Ambassador Donna Bauer for Bowel Cancer Awareness Month this June.

Former Carrum state Liberal MP Donna Bauer was 43 when she was diagnosed with bowel cancer.  There was a history of the disease in her family, but the mother of four thought it most commonly affected older people so she didn’t think it was worth getting her symptoms checked.

“I had been experiencing some discomfort since walking the Kokoda Track nine months earlier, but I was busy with parliamentary commitments and looking after my family and just couldn't seem to find the time to have the required medical tests to determine the cause,” Donna said.  “If I had not found the time when I did, the prognosis could have been very different.”

After undergoing surgery to remove the aggressive and localised cancer, Donna followed it up with six months of chemotherapy and is very lucky to be looking at a bright future.  Donna is currently working as a Sales Executive for hockingstuart in Chelsea, where she will be selling lapel pins to support Bowel Cancer Australia for $2 over the month of June.

After her recovery, she took the passion and campaigning skills she had developed in politics and directed them towards Bowel Cancer Australia as its Ambassador, using her high profile in the community to raise awareness of the disease and money for the organisation.

“I am passionate about raising awareness. If I can help to save one life by spreading the messages about looking after your health and the importance of early detection, then that's a good thing.

“Bowels may not be the most appealing topic of conversation, but it is a conversation we need to have. Make a vow to talk bowel.”

Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer after lung cancer, claiming the lives of 80 Australians every week and affecting men and women equally. There are an alarming number of young people who are being diagnosed also, shaking the perception that it is an older person’s disease.

Donna informed Frankly Frankston of a local 22-year-old, Callum Dodson, who was only recently diagnosed with a rare form of Bowel Cancer. To raise money to support him and his family, the Chelsea Heights Football Club are holding a community fundraiser at their club. ‘Kick it with Callum’ is a family day out on Sunday June 25, with silent auctions, live music, kid’s activities, food, drinks and much more from 12.30pm.

Fabulous fashions are a family affair by Kate Sears

Langwarrin mum Rebecca Corteling offers the latest on-trend women’s fashion at her store, Marylee Clothing. Every fortnight this fashion boutique receives more than 20 new styles to keep the store looking fresh, and with all the fashion finds under $100 you can afford to spoil yourself.

After having two children, Rebecca wanted to take advantage of her previous experience as a retail buyer and merchandiser to start an affordable online clothing store. This would allow her passion for sourcing new stylish products to be satisfied, and she would be able to work while still being on hand to look after her children.  This led to the launch of Marylee Clothing’s online shop and then to small pop-up shops at the shopping centre.

After this success, Rebecca opened her first retail store in March last year. She enjoys catching up with her regular customers and showing them the hottest looks of the season and new labels that she’s continuously sourcing. Browse her huge range of clothing and enjoy being styled for every occasion.

Her family plays a huge role in making this business possible. “My husband and children are very involved and supportive. My six-year-old son takes most of the photos of me in my ‘everyday outfits’ for our social media pages, and my daughter begs to be in the photos just like Mummy,” Rebecca says.  With so many late nights and tireless work, they’re so proud that this small family business is such a triumph.

Stop trashin’ that fashion

Before you throw out those old ties, trying imagining them as a dress.  Or that pile of rags as a handbag.

That’s what recycled artist Tina Strafford is calling on people to do with It’s Our Rubbish – an exhibition of wearable art that opens in July.

Tina, who runs the not-for-profit business Revamped Jewellery, was chatting with another artist Mara Requiman from Frank, the Frankston Regional Artisans’ Network, when the concept was born.  “She was eating her lunch and she said ‘Look at this; everything’s wrapped in plastic; what if we could challenge the community to create actually useable things that could be worn’.

“It was just a couple of artists sitting together thinking ‘What can we do to excite the community and challenge the community into stop putting that in the bin, and let’s turn it into something we can wear or we can sell’.  And people embraced it – we had a launch a couple of Sundays ago and when people saw these dresses made out of ties they were ‘Oh my gosh, can we buy these?’  There were shoes, a handbag made out of rags – all sorts of things.  Sometimes you just need someone to show you something outside the square and you go ‘Wow, that’s amazing – I can do that’.”

It’s Our Rubbish Wearable Art Exhibition will be held at Cube 37 from July 10 to August 5, and the community is invited to create and exhibit their own wearable art.  “We’re just trying to get the public – crafters, artists, anyone really – to put their thinking caps on and create something out of the rubbish that they find around themselves so it doesn’t end up in landfill … looking at it in a new light, revamping and making useful things out of it that you can sell so we don’t need to put in the rubbish bin.”

Entry is $20 to cover the costs of staging the exhibition, and there are prizes up for grabs.  Tina is also keen for sponsors to come on board so even more prizes can be offered.  For more details and entry forms, or for sponsorship information, phone Tina on 0407 561 333, email [email protected] or visit www.facebook.com/itsourrubbish
