Work-ready skills for hospitality jobs

web.jpg

The Mornington Peninsula has hundreds of wonderful restaurants and cafes that become increasingly busy between now and Easter.  During this period the hospitality sector is looking to hire staff, so be work-ready by completing a one-day course in Food Handlers and Responsible Service of Alcohol with Nepean Industry Edge Training.

NIET’s one-day course allows students to gain skills and knowledge in how to safely handle food to prevent contamination and also the requirements of serving alcohol in a responsible manner.  Upon successful completion you can apply for jobs within cafes and restaurants and earn some income over the busy summer period on the Peninsula.

NIET CEO Sharyn Bellingham recently completed the course and is now more aware of the safety issues around handling food.  “I was amazed at how easy it can be for people to become ill as a result of poor food handling,” Sharyn said. “The course has some great insights and provides students and the general public with increased skills.”

NIET student Maddie Cook found the course beneficial and straightforward. “It gave me good skills to use in applying for jobs,” Maddie said. “I would like to work in aged care and food safety is really important, so this course has helped a great deal.”

NIET trainers enjoy seeing students blossom after completing the course. The students come in feeling a little overwhelmed, but at the end of the day their confidence has grown, they have a better understanding of food safety and they have gained new skills that can be used to find employment.

If you would like to enrol in a one-day course, contact NIET on 9770 1633 or email [email protected]

Hair care comes naturally to Cody - BOKANY HAIR

Cody Bokany not only wants her clients to look fantastic, she wants them to feel fantastic too. That’s why, with her Bokany Hair salon, Cody places as much emphasis on what goes into the products she uses as she does on what effect they have on her clients’ hair.

Bokany Hair is a vegan salon and the hair care products Cody uses are made in Melbourne by Mr Smith. That’s a win-win for Cody — she is committed to supporting local manufacturers, and Mr Smith products are sulfate and paraben-free and are also approved by PETA. Cody also uses ZenzTherapy Alternative Color products, which are also vegan, include natural ingredients and contain neither ammonia nor PPD. Cody offers and recommends OLAPLEX with colour services or as a stand-alone rebonding treatment. While blondes are what she does the most and what she is more known for, Cody loves to use alternative colours and has plans to do more.

“My focus is about maintaining the health of my clients’ hair while reaching their goals,” she says. If having beautiful healthy hair without all the environmental nasties is as important to you as it is to Cody, you know who to call.

Dr Hull’s ethos to skin rejuvenation and anti-ageing is that of subtlety with a philosophy of conservatism and ‘less is more’. The common practice of applying youthful facial features such as flattened, expressionless foreheads and large full lips to a mature face sometimes results in an unbalanced appearance. Therefore Dr Hull prides himself in adopting a holistic approach to facial rejuvenation, which restores a natural radiance and healthiness to the skin. With well-judged targeted use of cosmetic injectables, he rebalances the face, enabling you to achieve a ‘natural’ rejuvenation and a desirable outcome.

Royalty Society also offers in-home luxury tanning appointments. With more than 10 years’ experience in the tanning industry, company director Jaide Hopwood guarantees a comfortable and professional experience with online booking and secure payment options available.

For exceptional natural results, Jaide recommends getting your tan one or two days before your event. Also, when you take your first shower after treatment, rubbing your skin gently to remove bronzers will prevent any lines or streaking. Finally, use pH-balanced or natural shower gels and moisturisers instead of acidic or fruit-based products, which can affect the longevity and appearance of your tan.

For tanning bookings, visit royaltysc.com and select “mobile appointments”, and email [email protected] for further information.

Annual awards honour selfless volunteers

Long-time volunteer and former Frankston Senior Citizen of the Year Alan Quaife is Impact Volunteering’s 2018 Volunteer of the Year.

Alan took out the Senior and Overall categories at Impact Volunteering’s recent annual awards, with Peter Talbot, from 3199 Beach Patrol, being named Community Services Volunteer of the Year and Bridie Keily, from Frankston Youth Council, named Youth Volunteer of the Year.

Caption1.jpg

Alan is the coach/manager of Frankston Peninsula Dolphin Sports, a mixed-ability sporting organisation that assists those within the community who may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate within a sports club. “Whether a coach, mentor or friend, there is not one facet of the organisation that Alan hasn’t been involved in over his six-plus years, sharing his passion and commitment with all involved with the sports club,” a Frankston Peninsula Dolphin Sports spokesman said.

The awards celebrate and recognise the valuable contributions that volunteers make in the community, often giving so much of their own time and resources. “Many outstanding nominations were received, making it a close decision,” an Impact Volunteering spokesman said. “We would like to thank all candidates who were nominated and for their great work in the community — you are all stars!”

Graham’s a gem when it comes to fire safety By Kate Sears

web.jpg

Gem Fire Service managing director Graham Millard is passionate about fire protection. However, his career in the industry started by accident.

Forty-eight years ago in Adelaide, his landlady set up an interview with a fire sprinkler company that was after young guys with an aptitude for mechanics to become trained as sprinkler fitters. To be polite and not embarrass her, Graham went along despite already working for a Holden dealer. Once the interviewer mentioned the pay, however, he was converted.

Graham set about learning as much as he could about the fire prevention industry, gaining 15 years of valuable experience in sprinkler systems, deluge systems, hydrant hose reels, CO2 systems and fire safety at power stations and industrial plants all over Australia.

After this came a desire to provide a higher level of service, and in 1985 Gem Fire Service was born. Graham holds five qualifications and has employed and trained nearly 100 apprentices. A six-week stint at Wormald in 1974 gave Graham a taste of Melbourne and he’s been here ever since, loving life on the Peninsula with his wife, three children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Put your best foot forward

web.jpg

Most people tend to not know the purpose of a podiatrist, outside of getting their toenails cut. So what does a podiatrist actually do? Podiatrists are specially trained health professionals who focus on foot and ankle assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management. Podiatrists help to prevent ulcerations, amputations, long-term deformities, and the negative impacts on your feet from many daily activities.

Podiatrists can assess your vascular, neurological, dermatological and musculoskeletal body systems to determine the health of your feet, which often reflects your general health. As the song goes, “The foot bone’s connected to the ankle bone, the ankle bone’s connected to the leg bone …”

But until you have had a full foot health assessment, there are some general activities you can do at home to help maintain your foot health:

Carry out daily foot checks. View the top, bottom and sides of your feet and between your toes. Look for anything outside the normal, such as calluses, corns and wounds.

Apply moisturiser daily (avoiding between your toes) to help keep your skin stretchy and strong with less chance of cracks.

Wear shoes that fit properly and that match the activity you are doing. For example, when walking along the foreshore, wear walking shoes, not high heels.

If in doubt, see your local podiatrist for advice.

Every October, Australia celebrates Foot Health Month, so keep a lookout for all the exciting promotions that are sure to come.

Financial advice you can count on

refinancing-quiz-lg.jpg

As a financial planning business, Dunsford Financial feels it is important to talk to you about what you have been observing in the media. The Royal Commission has called into question many common practices, and first and foremost is whether there is misconduct in banks and major financial institutions, and whether change is required to business models that are vertically integrated.

This temptation to cross-sell their own product into their own client networks is not always in the client’s best interest.  Unfortunately it will now take the Royal Commission to investigate such revelations which equates to approximately 88 per cent of the industry owned by the big four banks and AMP.

Dunsford Financial is not one of those businesses. Everyone at Dunsford Financial feels a mixture of sadness, anger and bewilderment that such appalling business practices have occurred at the big end of town and have gone unchanged for so long.

The team at Dunsford Financial love what they do and take enormous pride in helping people get their financial lives in order.  They have been advising people on the Mornington Peninsula for more than 35 years.

If you would like a second opinion on your current financial position, whether it be Superannuation, Aged Care, Life Insurance, Pensions or Wills, the team at Dunsford look forward to helping you.

Chris committed to delivering for Dunkley

IMG_0989 copy.jpg

Two years ago, 32-year old Chris Crewther, accompanied by wife Grace and daughter Yasmin, stepped out of the Australian Electoral Commission office in Frankston as the new Dunkley federal Liberal MP and the youngest member of the House of Representatives.

Chris’s predecessor, Bruce Billson, had held the seat for 20 years, and while Chris has drawn on Bruce’s legacy, he has forged his own path and identity in working hard to deliver for the residents of Dunkley.

“I’m passionate about giving the best opportunities to Dunkley locals,” Chris says. “I believe in equality of opportunity and enabling people to achieve their dreams no matter their background or where they live. One of the ways to do this is by connecting our community with the best transport, health and education infrastructure right here on our doorstep.”

To that end, Chris has secured $228 million towards building the biggest infrastructure project in Dunkley’s history — the extension of the Metro rail line from Frankston to Baxter.

As a local resident, Chris and his family also believe this area has the best of the city, the country and the coast. Chris also views fatherhood as hugely important in his role as an MP in understanding the needs of families. His particular emphasis on opportunities for young people to engage in the community has led to major advocacy and funding for sporting, education and training facilities and more.

“People want the best opportunities in life for themselves, their kids, their grandkids and their families,” he says. “I’ll keep on working as hard as I can, hand in hand with the local community, to achieve this vision for them and for Dunkley.”

Get in touch with Chris on 9781 2333, [email protected] or chriscrewther.com.au, or connect on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Still Pink and proud after 50 years

SEE CAPTION copy.jpg

Frankly Frankston Magazine’s editor, Kate Sears, delves into the history of the Pink Ladies, Peninsula Health’s longest running volunteer group, and explains how her great-grandmother started it all in April 1968.

Edna Vincent joined Frankston Hospital in 1951 as a member of the Frankston Community Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, a group of doctors’ wives that focused on fundraising. Her association with the hospital began in November 1941 when her husband, Dr Frank Vincent, became a member of its founding committee.

In 1952, Edna became president of the auxiliary. While dining with friends, an American guest suggested to Edna the idea of a hospital auxiliary with volunteer workers. After putting the concept forward to the hospital matron, she was refused until 1968, when the matron at the time, Jean Sutcliffe, asked Edna for some voluntary helpers. Lightening the workload of nurses and brightening up the lives of patients became a passion for Edna and her merry band of volunteers.

Fast-forward to 1982, and Edna had 200 or so dedicated members and had succeeded in raising millions of dollars for the hospital via raffles, operating two hospital kiosks, hiring televisions, street collections, stalls and an annual fete. The money raised then funded building projects and patient care equipment.

Celebrating its 50th year in service this year, this new auxiliary became fondly known as the Pink Ladies Auxiliary because the 15 founding members were given a distinctive cheerful uniform consisting of a floral pink dress, with white shoes and later a pink cape. These chirpy ladies in pink would help carry out services within the hospital to assist staff and patients with tasks such as folding linen, delivering newspapers, escorting new patients to their wards, delivering and maintaining patients’ flowers and so much more. Their help was truly invaluable.

Edna was awarded the MBE in 1964 for her outstanding services to the community. The Pinkies have also enjoyed visits from premiers and health ministers, and won the 2014 Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Award in the Metropolitan Volunteer Team of the Year Icon category, and a 2010 Minister for Health Award for Volunteering in the Most Outstanding Team Achievement Award category. Edna spread the concept of Pink Ladies to at least 15 other hospitals and remained president of the Pink Ladies’ Auxiliary for 31 years until her death in 1999.

Frankston Hospital has been able to continually grow and provide a high standard of patient care to the community thanks to Edna’s band of volunteers from past to present. Their dedication, support and tireless efforts are truly amazing, and they’ve raised a remarkable $8 million since day dot. The current president is Pauline Ellerby, and the Frankston Pink Ladies has 68 members who focus on the running of the kiosk as their main source of income. If you are interested in volunteering at Peninsula Health, contact the volunteer team on 9788 1536 or email [email protected]
