Two Flinders Christian College students have lent their design skills to a new parkour area at Ballam Park.

Isaac James and Levi Gould had direct input in the design consultation process as Frankston City Council prepares for a $1 million upgrade of the Cranbourne Rd playground

“We're super excited to have this new facility to be able to do what we love,” Isaac said. “All the new equipment will be great in getting more kids and teenagers outside and being more active and social.”

When work is completed in October, parkour enthusiasts will be able to run, jump and climb in an obstacle approach throughout an urban environment, including low intersecting concrete walls of varying heights, monkey bars and climbing frames

The park’s upgrade will also include the removal of ageing equipment and the installation of new features, the refurbishment of the existing fort, the installation of a larger flying fox (the existing one will be moved to another playground) and the creation of a scooter track to allow young children to learn to scoot and cycle in a safe environment.

Frankston Mayor James Dooley said the work was part of the council’s $4.6 million investment in Frankston’s playgrounds, parks and recreation areas. Seaford’s Keast Park is getting a $300,000 upgrade, including a natural space with sandpits, giant boulders, rolling timber walkways and a mega-swing, and designs are being finalised for work on the Frankston Waterfront playground, with new picnic facilities, shelters and play equipment.

“By investing in high-quality playgrounds we are providing a great location for families to come together and for children of all ages to make new friends as they explore, learn and develop in a fun environment,” Cr Dooley said.

Chris Farmer had been making his own beer for several years when he and a mate had the discussion that every home brewer eventually has: “What if we put some money together and gave this an actual crack.”

Two years later, Chris’s Seaford-based Mr.Banks Brewing Co. has just produced and distributed its first batch, opting for cans and kegs rather than glass.

Why? For a start it’s better for the beer, says Chris, because no light or oxygen – “The two killers of beer”- can enter a can. Canned beer also has a better shelf life, chills more quickly, is easier to ship … “and we think cans are way cooler”.

Chris, 30, was working 60 hours a week in a job he “didn't have the slightest interest in” when he decided to have “an actual crack” at brewing.

“I had a partner early on but things changed. Now I do pretty much the lot. My wife, Penny, is an accountant so she helps out on the tax side and on brewing/packaging days, and my old man helps out when and where he can, which is great. So at the moment it’s a family thing.

“We've had a lot of help along the way, especially from other local breweries who were happy to share information and insights. All in all I would say we are joining what would have to be the most supportive and helpful community - the craft beer family - and we couldn't be more excited about it.

“Everyone seems to be enjoying our first beer (Pier Side Pale Ale) and hopefully we can continue in that stead, focusing on our own backyard and then slowly venturing towards the city to get our beer in people’s hands.”

That should be easier when a canning machine arrives from Canada this month. The initial batch of beer was distributed in kegs, but by early to mid-August Chris hopes to have the first cans on the shelves.

“I love a lot of styles of beer so when I found a beer I liked, I would try to make one my way with my own twist. I use friends and family to test different batches on to get second and third opinions, but in the end, unless I like it, it’s not going to be brewed again.

“In saying that we do still have to make beers others are going to enjoy. If we don’t we won’t be around very long.”

The brewery’s name, by the way, comes from Chris’s dog, Banks, who was named after a character in the film The Mighty Ducks. “We really like the name Banks, so we decided to throw a ‘Mr’ on the front to give it a little more personality.”

Frankston blues man Geoff Achison has returned with Another Mile, Another Minute, his first studio album in almost a decade.

Recorded in Melbourne with co-producers Rob and Ben Harwood, this project features Achison with his band The Souldiggers - Gerry Pantazis on drums and Little River Band ex-members Roger McLachlan on bass and Mal Logan on keyboards - and with help from some heavy-hitting musical friends, including Chris Wilson, Lloyd Spiegel, Shannon Bourne, Susie Ahern and Steve Romig. You can expect plenty of blues, country, rock, funk, folk and even classical flavours on this latest offering. 

Achison and his Souldiggers have been producing outstanding yet uniquely blues/roots tunes for well over 20 years.  However, it’s Acho’s rich, husky vocals and diverse original compositions that morph the likes of blues, jazz, funk, rock and reggae, transporting punters into an exhilarating alternative parallel that transcends into that mystical place only brilliant musicians traverse.

Achison tours the US, England and Europe regularly but currently we have our boy back in Frankston, so now is probably a good time to catch him and his band before he heads back overseas in a couple of months.

Meanwhile, Achison’s wife, Michelle, has written a children’s book called Bruno’s Blues, which will be launched at the same time as the new album.  It tells the story of a guitar-picking blues hound and follows his adventures as he learns to play in the style of the old blues masters - a story not unlike Achison’s own journey.

Frankston students have given a collective thumbs-down to illegal graffiti as part of a program to tackle vandalism on our streets.

The Grade 6 students condemned unsightly graffiti in a writing competition run by Frankston City Council as part of its Responsible Street Art initiative, with five youngsters being named the winners for their responses.

Duke, from Frankston Primary School, wrote: “Graffiti can be beautiful. It can be a masterpiece. Yet mindless, illegal graffiti makes our streets look like we don’t care, it makes them look ugly. Illegal tagging is meaningless. Pointless. It’s an individual making an anarchistic statement, about what? It isn’t for the community.”

Cai, from Ballam Park Primary School, wrote: “Graffiti is a crime! Graffitiing is breaking more than one law. Firstly, sometimes the graffiti is making the environment look unpleasant and not presentable to the public. Secondly, you litter by leaving your used cans on the footpath and they eventually end up inside sea life. GRAFFITIING IS NOT COOL!”

Dieter, from Kinsley Park Primary School, wrote: “I dislike graffiti because it tarnishes an awe-inspiring town that is supposed to give comfort to its people. It ruins outstanding architecture and gorgeous streets. We must stop it before tourists go away and the citizens are in dismay. I don’t like graffiti and we must stop it. It ruins Frankston.”

Abul, from Seaford Park Primary School, wrote: “Ban graffiti now!!! Graffiti is horrible. Nobody likes our beautiful city getting wrecked by people tagging our city. The only works that should be done by everyone is street art which I love. Tagging is not cool. I honestly think people do it to look tough. Well, they’re not.”

Jemma, from Seaford Primary School, wrote: “I dislike the fact that people vandalize other people’s property. I also think that it’s a horrendous way to express yourself.  Graffiti makes me feel less secure, because it takes away the friendly environment. To me, street art can be beautiful, but they must first have permission from the owner.”

The second part of the initiative invited students in grades 6-8 to produce creative street art. The winning pieces, which are on display in Wells Lane, were created by Mikayla Bailey and Montana Veness, from Rowellyn Park Primary School; Olivia Cornwall and Caitlin Ridgway (Ballam Park Primary School); Elizabeth Carvosso and Lily-Rose Frank (Kananook Primary School); Mya Ellingsen and Matthew Hodson (Monterey Secondary College); Liam Knott (Carrum Downs Secondary College); and Jordan Jenkins and Daron Lewis-Williams (McClelland College).

Graffiti removal cost the council about $500,000 in the 2014-15 financial year, and Mayor James Dooley said educating students on the differences between vandalism and creative street art was an important step in the fight against the scourge.

The street art component aimed to “promote and encourage students’ creative skills while educating them on the consequences associated with committing illegal graffiti”, Cr Dooley said, while the writing competition emphasised “the dislike towards this type of vandalism and the sentiment that graffiti is not accepted by the youth within our community”.

“It is great to see that these students are taking illegal graffiti seriously.”

The Department of Justice and Regulation put up $25,000 for the art competition, while Melissa and Bridgette, from Melbourne Murals, shared their artistic talents with the students.
